Women Founders Learn Resilience, Leadership, and Fundraising Lessons from Anshu Agarwal

The TiE Women Program – TiE Silicon Valley continued its masterclass series with an inspiring session, “Resilience & Leadership as a Woman Founder” led by Anshu Agarwal, General Partner at Converge.

Rather than delivering a traditional presentation, Anshu chose to make the session a conversation, inviting founders to ask questions throughout and tailoring the discussion to the real challenges they face every day as entrepreneurs.

Drawing from more than two decades of experience as both a founder and operator before transitioning into venture capital, Anshu shared the defining moments that shaped her leadership journey. She spoke candidly about helping build companies through periods of rapid growth, surviving the dot-com crash, navigating uncertainty, and ultimately experiencing successful acquisitions. Those experiences, she explained, taught her that resilience isn’t about avoiding setbacks, it’s about learning how to respond to them.

One story that particularly resonated with participants was how her team responded during one of the most difficult moments in the company’s history. When half of their customer base disappeared during the dot-com downturn, everyone came together to keep the business alive. Team members voluntarily took pay cuts, stepped outside their formal roles, and focused relentlessly on serving customers. The experience reinforced one of Anshu’s biggest leadership lessons: great companies are built by resilient teams that are willing to solve problems together.

Throughout the discussion, Anshu emphasized that leadership starts with understanding your customers. She encouraged founders to identify their “zebra” customers, the ideal customers who truly need their solution, instead of chasing every opportunity that comes along. She also cautioned founders against mistaking temporary traction for true product-market fit, reminding participants that sustainable growth comes from solving meaningful problems for the right customers.

The conversation naturally evolved into fundraising, where founders asked thoughtful questions about raising pre-seed capital, building AI startups, investor expectations, and navigating today’s venture landscape. Anshu shared practical advice on choosing investors who bring more than capital, explaining that smaller, stage-focused funds often provide hands-on support, strategic guidance, and valuable customer introductions. She also advised founders to be thoughtful about accepting small investments from large venture firms, noting that the right investor relationship should be built on conviction, not simply optionality.

Another powerful takeaway centered on resilience in product development. Anshu encouraged founders, especially those building AI products to launch early, gather feedback quickly, and iterate continuously rather than waiting for perfection. She shared examples of successful AI companies that faced early criticism but improved through constant learning and customer feedback, reinforcing that progress often comes from embracing imperfection.

The founders actively participated throughout the session, asking questions about solo entrepreneurship, AI product development, co-founder dynamics, fundraising strategy, and investor psychology. The open dialogue created an environment where founders could learn not only from Anshu’s experience but also from one another’s perspectives and challenges.

The session concluded with an invitation for founders to stay connected and continue the conversation beyond the masterclass, a reflection of the collaborative community that the TiE Silicon Valley Women Program is designed to foster.

We extend our sincere thanks to Anshu Agarwal for generously sharing her experiences, leadership lessons, and practical advice with our founders. Her honesty, authenticity, and willingness to answer every question made this an invaluable learning experience for the cohort.

As the TiE Women Program – TiE Silicon Valley continues over the coming weeks, participants will build on these insights through additional masterclasses, one-on-one mentoring, and networking opportunities designed to help them become stronger leaders and accelerate the growth of their startups.
